Art teachers are in a unique position to meet the needs of our ever-increasing population of English Language Learners (ELLs) as we use the language of the visual arts as a way to communicate effectively. This session provides an overview of the laws surrounding English Language Learning, Sheltered English Immersion, and the ways in which art teachers are required to meet student needs. Expert instructors with experience in both visual art and language acquisition will walk you through the creation of instructional aids, provide valuable and relevant resources, implement strategies for sheltering instruction in the art room while providing insight on how to respect and embrace the cultural backgrounds of this student population.

This session provides a theoretical background of mindfulness while providing techniques for implementing secularized contemplative practices specifically designed for visual art classrooms. Mindfulness as a practice has been proven to help combat toxic stress while enhancing overall presence, awareness, focus, calm, resilience, attention, compassion, emotional regulation, adaptability, self-control, recovery, and memory among others. This session will cover methods for embedding contemplative practice into art classrooms through creative visual art experiences aimed to cultivate heartfulness, where kindness, compassion, positivity and empathy. Created by a leading scholar with over 30 years of experience teaching art and practicing mindfulness, this session is for any teacher seasoned or beginner wanting to explore the positive effects of contemplative practice in any art education setting.

This three-tiered training builds on your personal experiences while providing ongoing mentorship by the world-renowned Tape Art® Crew. Tape Art® Facilitator Training is designed to teach you how to implement all aspects of collaborative Tape Art® experiences within your school and community. This training will provide opportunities for teachers to practice research-backed strategies for engaging groups in collaborative making, creating large-scale public works of art, and finding ways to create purposeful art in your communities. Badges are earned at each level so that you can show-off your Tape Art® skills!

Given that the arts are such a significant part of culture, this session highlights the multitude of ways art education can act as a catalyst for meaningful learning experiences that honor student’s unique cultural frameworks. Culturally responsive pedagogy is a student-centered approach that embraces curriculum and instruction to nurture a sense of well-being while celebrating student’s cultural place in the world, thus promoting achievement holistically. This session will provide an overview of the theory and philosophical underpinnings while providing ways art teachers can create inclusive classrooms that foster empathy and connectedness using big ideas, narrative, and discovery. Instructors will tackle issues surrounding race, religion, power, and privilege as they affect our educational system while providing immediate and applicable methods to effect positive change and heighten learning for all students.

If you are interested in creating or altering your instruction to be more student-centered, with a focus on crafting experiences that allow students to explore self-expression by providing choice and agency, this session is for you! Taking a holistic view, teachers will create student opportunities that focus on fostering artistic behaviors that nurture their creative selves through authentic artmaking experiences. This session covers the theoretical backbone and philosophies of The Open Art Room approach, provides an instructional framework for varied levels of Choice, and assists in crafting authentic assessments, while providing clear connections and a multitude of exemplars from seasoned Choice art teachers.
