Exploring Visual Design engages students with the foundational concepts and structures they need to discuss, think about, plan, and create works of art and design. Students learn about the elements of art as the ingredients of art and the principles of design as organizational guidelines that shape creative work across media. Through examples from around the world, hands-on artmaking, thoughtful discussion, and meaningful reflection, students respond to art, connect with concepts and cultures, create original work, and share their ideas—building visual literacy, design thinking, problem-solving skills, and confidence along the way.

Organized around the elements of art and principles of design, Exploring Visual Design takes students from foundational concepts to creative application. Each chapter combines art and design examples, discussion, hands-on activities, and opportunities to apply new ideas through original artmaking.
Students will:

- Engage with historic and contemporary artworks, discuss artistic choices, compare and contrast approaches, and build visual literacy and critical-thinking skills.
