10 Things Art Educators Should Do in the Summer
During the school year, art educators spend so much time and energy on lesson planning and student projects that their own artistic practice and inspiration often falls by the wayside. For art educators, summer is not just a break! Summer is a vital period for growth, preparation, and restoration. It is a time that helps nurture creativity and renew passion, so they return to the classroom inspired and better equipped for the new school year.

To help kick off a rejuvenating summer break, we had the pleasure of hosting NAEA President, Cindy Todd, on #K12ArtChat the podcast. This engaging conversation was filled with joy, inspiration, and a whole lot of suggestions to spark creative renewal. Grab a cool beverage and find a shady spot to sit and listen in! Too busy enjoying the bliss of summer? Take a look at some of Cindy’s suggestions!
Top 10 Things Art Educators Should Do in the Summer:
1. Rest! Refill your creative well. Breathe. Visit museums & stroll.
2. Reflect on your year (or be doomed to repeat the mistakes of the last one). Jot down some notes to yourself before your memory fades.
3. Plan one fresh project or technique. Toss those failed projects and replace them with something that excites you.
4. Organize the chaos. Simplify your space and your scheduled commitments. Do what feeds your goals and your soul then gracefully bow out of the rest.
5. Create for you! Feed your inner artist and reclaim your joy.
6. Connect with fellow creatives. Pair this with number 5 and meet with art friends once a week to create for a couple hours in the AM and then grab lunch. The structured schedule and friends will spark you into action!
7. Stimulate your mind. Take a class, join a workshop, complete some leadership training.
8. Read something that inspires you and something just for fun.
9. Update your resume/portfolio. Be poised and ready to leap for those surprise opportunities.
10. Celebrate your role as a creative leader. You know your contributions are great and they deserve some revelry!
Enjoy your summer!
