View of Bald Mountain, Orange City, New Jersey
This landscape study is by one of the Hudson River School artists, whose aim was to portray landscapes around the Hudson River area with as great accuracy and recognizability as possible. He often indicated on his studies what colors (though not in this one) he thought he would use in certain areas. The touches of white gouache highlight the areas where the sunlight is brightest.
