The Rocks
Van Gogh use not only color to imitate the texture of rocks and grass and even swirling clouds, but also brush stroke. He achieves textures for the different elements of nature by varying the brush stroke and thickness of paint. Such a thick build-up of paint, which is tangible, is known as IMPASTO.
