The Harbor at Lorient
After meeting the Barbizon painters—many of whom painted outdoors—she resolved to paint from nature. She was one of the first women painters to challenge the established, male-dominated French Salon, and succeeded in exhibiting works there every year for ten years, starting in 1864. She was a significant force in the first revolution in painting that led to many modern movements.
