Saint-Mammès, Loing Canal
As in most of his landscapes, Sisley makes a minimal reference to humanity in both of these paintings. In Saint-Mammès, Loing Canal, the sky dwarfs the land, taking up two-thirds of the canvas. Illustrating the influence of traditional English landscapes, the subject is timeless but not sentimental.
