Lerma Water Works, close-up of head, front, Chapultepec Park
In an attempt to create a national Mexican style, Rivera turned conclusively away from modernism and towards the ideals of balance, symmetry, and clarity reflected in Renaissance art. He also turned to the painting and sculpture of the ancient Mayans for inspiration. The Mexican Revolution had inspired a rediscovery and reevaluation of native cultures and traditions.
