In the Dining Room
This painting dates from Morisot's last decade, a time when her forms became more fragmented and dissolved of contour. The quick, sketchy brushstrokes are indicative of working directly from the subject. The dissolution of form and minimal background cause background and figure nearly to merge. Although the scene is a quiet one, the active brushwork and high-key color harmonies create a vigorous, decorative surface.
