From the “North American Indian” series: Comanche Mother
Curtis began photographing Native Americans in the late 19th century, realizing that he was documenting a vanishing way of life. Although he attempted to show these people in their natural surroundings involved in everyday activities, his use of the soft, photogravure printing process gives his images a romantic and somewhat posed quality.
