Crowned Virgin and Child (The Virgin of Valvanera)
Gallery Label
This small work on copper by Miguel Cabrera depicts the Virgin of Valvanera and was likely made for private devotional use. The original Virgin of Valvanera, patroness of the Rioja region in Spain, is a Romanesque sculpture. Legend tells that following the reconquest of the region from the Moors, an angel led a man to the sculpture of the Virgin, which was hidden within a large oak tree that had a spring at its roots and a beehive in its trunk.
