Burghers of Calais, general view
Rodin was one of the first artists to explore the expressionistic possibilities of cast sculpture. The dramatic power is realized in the oversized hands and powerful, large bodies, the rough-hewn faces, and the dramatically open composition. All of these elements went against the prevalent classicism in sculpture. Rodin was one of the leaders of the revival of interest in monumental sculpture which took a direction other than the classicist tendencies of academic sculpture.
