#189 Wife of Cologne Painter Peter Abelen
August Sander was a German photographer who set out to make a photographic record of Germany's social classes and occupations. Each of his subjects occupies a specific place in Germany's social order during the first half of the twentieth century. After he published the first volume of his study, he was prohibited from further publication because his analysis of German society was at variance with Nazi ideology. Nonetheless, he continued his photographic project without publishing it. (Naomi Rosenblum, A World History of Photography. New York, 1984)
