Visual art lessons that include social emotional learning (SEL)

As schools start to reopen virtually, in hybrid formats or face-to-face, art teachers are well positioned to support students with their social and emotional needs by fostering meaningful and authentic connections in and through the arts. To best assist art teachers with embedding classroom-tested strategies for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into their existing curriculum, Davis Publications invites you to submit lessons and/or curriculum units that include SEL components to be featured in upcoming professional development sessions, presentations, publications, and resource materials.

Lesson Focus: Visual art lessons and/or units that address one or more of the core tenets of SEL (as identified by CASEL, 2020)

Deadline: October 12, 2020

Submission Requirements:

  • Lesson and/or unit plan submitted as a Word document that includes:
    • Title page with your name, school/affiliation, home address, and email address.
    • Essential Question, Objectives, National Visual or Media Art Standards that are addressed.
    • Overview that indicates what the students will know and be able to do as a result of the lesson, and how students will engage with a big idea or universal theme.
    • Brief explanation of the procedure the teacher and students will follow, step-by-step. Strong procedure descriptions include short explanations on the following:
      • Prepare - materials to gather for use, connections to the essential question, guiding questions and discussion prompts, key terms/ vocabulary, media explorations or technique practice.
      • Teach - bulleted list of the steps you take to teach the lesson, this may include engaging students, investigating artwork as inspiration, contemporary art, art criticism, and artistic production, etc.
      • Assess - briefly description of evaluation techniques, this may include self-assessment prompts, summative (end of lesson rubric criteria) and formative (informal, informative) procedures.
      • Close - brief description of ways the class will summarize and reinforce content, this may include structure discussions and activities, thought-provoking questions, and connections that transfer knowledge and skills beyond the lesson.
    • Approximately 800 words (maximum 1,000 words)
    • Optional: Supplemental materials such as handouts, assessments, self-assessments
  • Four or more high-quality images of student final artworks and/or process photos work with corresponding release forms (Click here for form.)
    • The lesson document should include a caption for each image that includes the student’s name and grade level.
    • Do not embed images in Word document.
    • Videos can be accommodated.
