Quick-to-See Smith, Jaune (United States, b.1940)
Sart captures the stinging reality of the discrimination and hardships that many Native Americans have experienced in the United States. Smith's I See Red: Ten Little Indians recalls the popular children's nursery rhyme. Yet, the inclusion of only four figures alludes to the appalling death rate of young native children. Smith writes the rhyme in her tribal tongue across notebook paper and a chalkboard, confronting the mistaken belief that native peoples have no written language. At the same time, the classroom image refers to the efforts of government and missionaries to erase Native- American children's sense of heritage.
