Four-Faced God, from Ishchali
Large or small scale bronze sculpture was not common in ancient Near Eastern cultures. This piece is a solid cast of the Sky God Anu. The sky god was often depicted with four faces, as he is here, to represent the four cardinal points on the compass. Sumerian and Babylonian temples were also oriented so that the four corners were aligned with the cardinal points.
