Figurine: kneeling bull holding a vessel, from Jamdat Nasr
Bull cults existed in many ancient cultures across Asia Minor. This bull is dressed in the typical knee-length skirt-like garment worn by men in the ancient Near East. Animals acting the roles of humans was a recurring theme in Near Eastern art. Many of the gods of the region had animal heads or bodies, or had animals as their sacred animals (such as Hathor in Egypt had the cow).
