City Gate, during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II
In this painting, the Temple of Bel appears on the horizon. The Ishtar Gate, named for the goddess of sex and war Ishtar, is in the foreground. This portal was the beginning of the main processional way which led to the Temple of Bel. The processional way was lined with walls decorated with sixty figures of lions in relief on brightly colored glazed bricks.
