“Concerning the Holy Spirit” and other texts by Didymus Alexandrinus for Matthew Corvinus, King of Hungary, frontispiece: Saint Jerome with Corvinus and his family
The demise in importance of manuscript illumination is foreshadowed in this amazingly realistic depiction of the king and his queen and in-laws before an architectural fantasy surrounding an image of St Jerome in his study. Such elaborate realism was more suited to panel painting. Compare these dedication page portraits to that of Hawisia de Bois in #04!
