Portal, Chartreuse de Champmol, detail: Marguerite de Flandres
Sluter was one of few sculptors active during the early Renaissance in northern Europe, but his style was very forward looking. This woman is the wife of Duke Phillip the Bold of Burgundy, and her features are depicted very realistically. Northern Renaissance artists tended to prefer extreme realism in portraiture in contrast with Italian idealization.
