House of Viceroys, (Royal Palace after 1808), entrance façade
The Palace of the Viceroys was designed in a restrained late Baroque style. Because Rio de Janeiro was the colonial and then national capital with close ties to Portugal than other Brazilian cities, and because there were no existing native Indian cities to provide influences as was the case in both Peru and Mexico, its architecture reflected pure European style.
