Critics have pointed to Thomas Eakins, Jean-Baptiste Chardin, and Giorgio Morandi as influences on Thiebaud's realist painting style. However, when Thiebaud's food paintings were first exhibited in New York in 1962, they were immediately regarded as a major manifestation of West Coast Pop.
