A Musical Party
Moronobu is considered the first true master of the ukiyo-e style, though many of his works were paintings. He established the compositional types of groups of elegantly clad women involved in fashionable pursuits which remained in use until the 19th century. Here a group of court ladies entertain themselves on the 'samisen', a three-stringed instrument with long neck.
