Set Description and Contents:
Lawrence began painting seriously in the 1930s, producing many scenes of Harlem. He met many famous African American artists and writers. By meeting these artists, he gained an appreciation for the importance of promoting African American culture and cultural history. He recognized the need for visual documentation of the black struggle for equality.
